Getting Around North Cyprus: From Car Hire to Mobility Scooters

Getting Around North Cyprus: From Car Hire to Mobility ScootersYou’re probably well aware that getting TO North Cyprus is getting easier and cheaper all the time as more people realise that you can use the airports at Larnaca and Paphos in the south as well as at Ercan in the North for arrival flights, and that there are some cheap airlines offering more affordable deals to all of Cyprus’s airports if you just book far enough in advance.

But what about getting AROUND North Cyprus once you arrive?  Well, there are many options open to you from car hire to mobility scooter hire, bicycle rental and even scooter rental.  In this article we’ll give you the low down on what’s available as well as some useful links to businesses in North Cyprus who can help you explore the island and get the best out of your holiday.

Car hire is a profitable business in any holiday resort or any holiday island like Cyprus so you’ll find there are so many companies to choose from that it can make things a bit difficult actually!  You need to know that hire cars in the North are not permitted to go over the border to the south, but the Northern Cypriot authorities are far more friendly and accommodating and they let hire cars from the south into the North.

As all companies in the North are in direct competition with each other, the majority charge pretty much the same amount.  Where one company seems to be offering a deal at a far cheaper price than another, ask them about the extra charges – you can guarantee there will be some!  So, the main criteria is that you use a car hire company that has safe and reliable cars, that they will do airport transfers and be available to you any time of the day or night should you encounter a problem.  Try Pe-To cars in Alsancak and ask for Pearl, or look in the Buzz Book and ring round.  Out of season you can get some good deals, but if you’re arriving between Easter and the end of the school summer holidays you need to book a car far enough in advance or risk having to pay a premium as all companies get booked up quickly.

If you don’t want a car and you prefer a scooter, many of the car hire companies also have them for rental – check the state of the scooter and make sure the breaks and tyres are sound before agreeing to a rental.  Always wear a helmet – no, they don’t look cool but neither will you if you have an accident when not wearing one!

If you have mobility restrictions the good news is that a brand new company has established itself in Northern Cyprus offering mobility scooters, power-chairs, electric wheelchairs and rollators for hire.  The company’s called Enable Holiday Mobility and it’s being run by a lovely couple who have run just such a business for many years in the UK.  Visit the website to find out more about the services they can offer you to ensure you get out and about and around Northern Cyprus in comfort and with ease.

Finally, if you’re far more active and able and don’t want a car, a scooter or mobility assistance and all you want is a bicycle – good for you!  You can hire bikes from the harbour area in Kyrenia, you can hire them from many of the car rental offices and even some hotels, or Enable Holiday Mobility has adult bicycles for rental too.

Being able to get out and about and explore the delights of Northern Cyprus is essential – it’s not an island to visit and just sit around the edge of a hotel pool because there is so much to do and see and explore and enjoy.  So, consider how you’ll get around Northern Cyprus and book your ideal transportation mode well in advance of your stay.
