When you’re enjoying your hard earned two weeks in the sun, am I right in saying there’s actually nothing worse than hearing your little darlings uttering those immortal words ‘I’m bored’? After all, what that means is – ‘entertain me – NOW’ which is quite possibly the last thing you want to have to do when you’re trying to sunbathe and escape from it all!

A recent television program in the UK that focused on buying property in North Cyprus told the story of a couple who had bought an apartment in Girne and who had had a horrible time getting building work completed despite having paid up front for the completion of their home. Clearly the commentary accompanying the facts was written in such a way that viewers would feel this was par for the course if you buy property in North Cyprus and that also, North Cyprus is the only place on the planet to have such awful stories of buyers being treated so shoddily…
However, when you actually look at the facts that the program sought to convey in their own right and then consider the general issues at hand by taking a common sense and logical approach to each problem discussed, you’ll realize that actually, had the buyers had better legal representation and had they done a little more due diligence they may well have avoided many of their problems. Additionally, not one of their problems was unique to North Cyprus – you will find similar tales being told in Spain, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey for example. So how can you avoid these problems yourself? With our commonsense guide - ‘how to safely buy property in North Cyprus’ – it’s written with first hand knowledge and hindsight so that you can learn from our mistakes and benefit from our experience!
Depending on the sources you read and the people you speak to Guzelyurt translates to mean ‘beautiful country’ or ‘good earth’ - while neither is a perfect literal translation both meanings get right to heart of the matter and that is, Guzelyurt and the surrounding villages in North West Cyprus are stunningly beautiful, rich and fertile.
Springtime or Autumn are the best times to visit this particular part of Cyprus when the fruit trees are in full bloom or when all the citrus fruits and vegetables for which the area is famous are ripening or being harvested - but whenever you choose to visit there are a number of tourism attraction in Guzelyurt in North Cyprus and in this article we will introduce you to them.
In the Cyprus Today newspaper this week there was a leading article about the requirement of homeowners in the TRNC to pay income tax on any profits that they derive from the rental of their real estate assets in North Cyprus - whether they are resident on the island or not.
This information relating to income tax and renting property in North Cyprus is not new, but the newspaper needed to publish it again because there has been a significant increase in the numbers of those coming to the island to buy investment property that they then rent out to holidaymakers for example. In this article we detail the income tax requirements and explain how you pay it and whether you can claim it back on your UK tax return.
Well, the UK schools have broken up for their Easter holidays and suddenly the tourist season is upon us in North Cyprus - which means that it’s an appropriate time to write about the ten top things to do and see in North Nicosia…but in reality I’m using the tourists as an excuse!
I’ve been to North Nicosia a million times, I visit the market, have a coffee, run a few errands and then I leave having once again ignored all the signs pointing to sites of historical interest. And so, using visitors to North Cyprus as an excuse I took it upon myself to pay attention to the signs and the guidebooks and this is what I found:-
One of the most proactive charitable organisations working in North Cyprus is Kyrenia Animal Rescue or KAR. The charity tends to sick, injured and abandoned animals, it deals with stray dogs and cats, it is always available for advice and assistance to the general public and it has hundreds of animals at its rescue centre that the dedicated members of staff and volunteers at the charity have saved and nursed back to health…but the charity is in crisis.
Kyrenia Animal Rescue needs your help. An article published in the Cyprus Today newspaper this week has highlighted the financial difficulties that the charity is enduring at the moment and the statistics, facts and figures published show not only what an incredible organisation KAR is, but that we all have to act quickly and decisively to do all we can to keep the charity going.
Because Larnaca airport is so accessible from many airports across the UK, Ireland and Europe it’s a popular airport to use for those coming to North Cyprus; as a result many people have contacted us requesting driving directions to take them from Larnaca airport to North Cyprus across the Metehan crossing in Nicosia.
We, like so many others must have written this route out ten times at least and so now, to save us the hassle of ever having to do it again and to save you the hassle of getting lost (hopefully!) here are the ultimate driving directions from Larnaca airport in South Cyprus to Kyrenia (Girne) and Karsiyaka in North Cyprus.
Now that North Cyprus’s latest asset has finally come to completion we thought we’d better go and have a look at Korineum Golf and Country Club to see what all the fuss has been about. We have to be honest, as non-golfers we were not terribly excited at the prospect of the new golf course and facilities out in Esentepe but suffice to say we were exceedingly impressed by what we found.
Korineum Golf and Country Club has been a long time in the planning and development stages but when you see the amount of effort that has gone into literally transforming the entire massive site, you realize just why it took so long! The visionary behind the creation of this fantastic Golf Course and Country Club has positively and significantly shaped the future of North Cyprus.
We’re not teenagers - and however much we like to think we can remember what it’s like to be at an age where everything is changing and school life is becoming more stressful, rest assured we can’t relate to the experiences of teenagers and young adults today. Which is why we’ve enlisted the help of a teenager who moved to live in North Cyprus last year to assist us with this, the ‘Teenagers’ Guide to Moving to and Living in North Cyprus.’
Thanks to Tyler Williamson from Karsiyaka who attends Sunny Lane Senior School and who moved to live in North Cyprus in June 2006 – she helped us with the essential facts and exclusive content for this article.
It seems that the tide is definitely turning in Northern Cyprus as a result of the positive developments in the Orams case and the first successful resolution of a case by the North Cyprus Property Commission; an increasing number of international citizens are considering moving to live full time in this stunning country. Of course there are plenty of opportunities to develop a business here, find a job or even just put your feet up and enjoy life, so it’s no wonder now that things have calmed right down on the property litigation front that more people are confident about buying property and moving to live in Northern Cyprus.
However, this inward flow of interest from those who want to come and live here right now is creating a problem – there is a shortage of resale property in North Cyprus! There’s plenty available off plan if you’re prepared to wait for anything up to two years, but if you want to buy now and move in tomorrow then your property options are restricted.
For quite some time there have been rumours abounding relating to the construction of a marina in Esentepe in North Cyprus. Certain constructors have already marketed properties on the back of an almost mythical marina and like the much talked about Esentepe golf course (which became a reality eventually), many people wondered whether the marina plans would actually come to fruition.
Well, the very good news is that construction is due to begin on Port Cyprium Marina in Kucuk Erenkoy near Esentepe in North Cyprus in 2007, and while solid plans for the marina have been in place since 2005 it has taken time to get all of the legal and legislative issues through government which is why the rumours about the marina have been circulating for so long.
In terms of hotels, restaurants, bars as well as social and entertainment facilities and amenities in Northern Cyprus in general, it’s fair to say that there are two distinct angles that proprietors tend to favour.
On the one hand you have those who go for the affordable quality angle and on the other hand you have those focused on the exclusive, luxurious and sumptuous quality angle - and the Vaha Spa restaurant certainly falls into the latter category!
Although Girne (Kyrenia) is very much the focus for tourism interest in North Cyprus, few visitors to the island actually choose to stay in the town preferring instead to rent a villa away from day to day life downtown and all of the associated noise and traffic!
Which is why it’s a surprise to us that so much emphasis is always placed on bars and restaurants in Girne – to buck the trend we thought we’d sample nightlife in North Cyprus’ Lapta which is a very popular location to the west of Girne for holidaymakers.
As we move towards winter many people begin suffering from aches and pains and stiff joints as well as coughs and colds. Furthermore, the depletion in sunshine levels even in a country as sunny as Cyprus can negatively affect some people, causing them to feel blue or even depressed or causing them fatigue and even creating headaches in some people – as a result achieving the levels of optimum health necessary for us to go happily and peacefully about our daily lives can seem difficult.
However, did you know that there is a lesser known, non-invasive and affordable therapy that detects and alleviates imbalances of the body in order to enhance overall health and wellbeing and that there is a highly qualified practitioner of this therapy living and working in Northern Cyprus?
The most frequently asked questions that we receive from people planning a new life in North Cyprus are all about getting the internet, getting a telephone line and keeping up to date with their favourite TV programs – after all communication and entertainment are important to all of us.
Most people who contact us for information and advice about these things believe that you have to have a monster satellite dish in your garden to get SKY TV, that you cannot get a phone line for love nor money and that none of the internet providers in North Cyprus can actually supply anything like a broadband connection - well, all that used to be the case until…the Iceman cometh and now broadband internet, English TV and telephone lines are all possible in Northern Cyprus.
