About time too! An essential and complete, comprehensive and all encompassing new guide to North Cyprus has been launched online – and it’s actually been written by people who know about the subject matter they’re dealing with!
Having seen other guides to the island come and go as contributors have failed to find enough to write about, we were delighted to be granted a sneak preview of the brand new Essential Cyprus website, and realise that it is being written and populated with content by those who live on and love the island and who know it inside out!
A great deal of effort has been made on behalf of the British government to alert us all to the pension deficit that the majority of us are likely to face when we hit retirement. What’s more, the media is doing its bit to try and warn us all that the state pension is shrinking in relative terms and is unlikely to even exist for much longer as baby boomers swallow up what small pot there is available.
So the one thing on the majority of people’s minds when it comes to retirement is affordability – but not at any cost. After all, in retirement we want a good standard of living, quality healthcare and also a decent home to call our own which are all reasons why North Cyprus comes top for retirement abroad.
There’s a new demographic in the UK – the FRED – an over fifty, pre-retiree who is Facing Retirement Earnings Deficits and who is seeking an affordable solution for retirement. This group is being impacted by the cost of living in the UK, high fuel prices and accommodation costs and also the fact that many of them are in part still supporting children and even grandchildren because the cost of living in the UK has risen so far so fast.
For those who want to find a solution to their retirement earnings deficit issues but who have no way of topping up their pension pot, what about planning an affordable retirement abroad in North Cyprus?
You’re probably well aware that getting TO North Cyprus is getting easier and cheaper all the time as more people realise that you can use the airports at Larnaca and Paphos in the south as well as at Ercan in the North for arrival flights, and that there are some cheap airlines offering more affordable deals to all of Cyprus’s airports if you just book far enough in advance.
But what about getting AROUND North Cyprus once you arrive? Well, there are many options open to you from car hire to mobility scooter hire, bicycle rental and even scooter rental. In this article we’ll give you the low down on what’s available as well as some useful links to businesses in North Cyprus who can help you explore the island and get the best out of your holiday.
On the first of January 2008, Cyprus – as in the Republic of (south) Cyprus - joined the euro. The country and its citizens are slowly getting used to the new currency and giving up their Cyprus pound with which they were always able to dupe Brits into thinking everything was a bit of a bargain when they went on holiday when in reality, the Cyprus pound was in the region of 20% more expensive that its British namesake!
So, now that the Greek side of the island has adopted the euro, where does this leave the Turkish Cypriots and the expats living on the north where the volatile Turkish lira is the official currency? In this article we look at North Cyprus, shopping and the euro as well as how the economies and people of Cyprus get along really!
The thought of retiring abroad is increasingly on pre-retirees minds nowadays for a number of specific reasons. Firstly, as the state pension in the UK is eroded by ever higher costs of living in Britain it makes sense to examine whether other, overseas destinations can allow for the state or even a private pension to go that much further. Secondly, more and more people are retiring abroad and it is becoming easier to do so.
But with the decision to expatriate in retirement comes a number of issues, concerns and worries. In this article we’ll tackle retiring to Northern Cyprus and making new friends – because with a good network of familial and friendly support behind you, you can do anything!
I don’t know about you but I love a bit of market shopping! Just browsing stallholders’ wares or bargain hunting, haggling and finding unique items not for sale in any of your high street chains can be a lot of fun. If I’m on holiday and there’s a market I’m straight there! The good news for visitors and residents in TRNC is that there’s a whole host of opportunities for market shopping in North Cyprus.
Lapta, Guzelyurt, Karaoglanoglu, Lefkosia, Karsiyaka, Alsancak and Girne all have markets that take place weekly in the majority of cases, and which offer the buyer or the browser plenty of stalls to peruse.
Well, the UK schools have broken up for their Easter holidays and suddenly the tourist season is upon us in North Cyprus - which means that it’s an appropriate time to write about the ten top things to do and see in North Nicosia…but in reality I’m using the tourists as an excuse!
I’ve been to North Nicosia a million times, I visit the market, have a coffee, run a few errands and then I leave having once again ignored all the signs pointing to sites of historical interest. And so, using visitors to North Cyprus as an excuse I took it upon myself to pay attention to the signs and the guidebooks and this is what I found:-
One of the most proactive charitable organisations working in North Cyprus is Kyrenia Animal Rescue or KAR. The charity tends to sick, injured and abandoned animals, it deals with stray dogs and cats, it is always available for advice and assistance to the general public and it has hundreds of animals at its rescue centre that the dedicated members of staff and volunteers at the charity have saved and nursed back to health…but the charity is in crisis.
Kyrenia Animal Rescue needs your help. An article published in the Cyprus Today newspaper this week has highlighted the financial difficulties that the charity is enduring at the moment and the statistics, facts and figures published show not only what an incredible organisation KAR is, but that we all have to act quickly and decisively to do all we can to keep the charity going.
We’re not teenagers - and however much we like to think we can remember what it’s like to be at an age where everything is changing and school life is becoming more stressful, rest assured we can’t relate to the experiences of teenagers and young adults today. Which is why we’ve enlisted the help of a teenager who moved to live in North Cyprus last year to assist us with this, the ‘Teenagers’ Guide to Moving to and Living in North Cyprus.’
Thanks to Tyler Williamson from Karsiyaka who attends Sunny Lane Senior School and who moved to live in North Cyprus in June 2006 – she helped us with the essential facts and exclusive content for this article.
For quite some time there have been rumours abounding relating to the construction of a marina in Esentepe in North Cyprus. Certain constructors have already marketed properties on the back of an almost mythical marina and like the much talked about Esentepe golf course (which became a reality eventually), many people wondered whether the marina plans would actually come to fruition.
Well, the very good news is that construction is due to begin on Port Cyprium Marina in Kucuk Erenkoy near Esentepe in North Cyprus in 2007, and while solid plans for the marina have been in place since 2005 it has taken time to get all of the legal and legislative issues through government which is why the rumours about the marina have been circulating for so long.
As we move towards winter many people begin suffering from aches and pains and stiff joints as well as coughs and colds. Furthermore, the depletion in sunshine levels even in a country as sunny as Cyprus can negatively affect some people, causing them to feel blue or even depressed or causing them fatigue and even creating headaches in some people – as a result achieving the levels of optimum health necessary for us to go happily and peacefully about our daily lives can seem difficult.
However, did you know that there is a lesser known, non-invasive and affordable therapy that detects and alleviates imbalances of the body in order to enhance overall health and wellbeing and that there is a highly qualified practitioner of this therapy living and working in Northern Cyprus?
The most frequently asked questions that we receive from people planning a new life in North Cyprus are all about getting the internet, getting a telephone line and keeping up to date with their favourite TV programs – after all communication and entertainment are important to all of us.
Most people who contact us for information and advice about these things believe that you have to have a monster satellite dish in your garden to get SKY TV, that you cannot get a phone line for love nor money and that none of the internet providers in North Cyprus can actually supply anything like a broadband connection - well, all that used to be the case until…the Iceman cometh and now broadband internet, English TV and telephone lines are all possible in Northern Cyprus.
Anyone considering buying property in Northern Cyprus should appoint a lawyer in the TRNC to give them independent North Cyprus legal advice and to handle the conveyancing aspects and application process for permission to purchase real estate.
A lawyer should be chosen on the basis that they are independent of any other party involved in the purchase/sale process (i.e., it is not wise to use the same solicitor as the property vendor or developer), they should be qualified in the laws of Northern Cyprus and in the process of house conveyancing and ideally they should have experience of dealing with property sales in the TRNC involving foreign or non-resident purchasers.
The standard and availability of medical care in North Cyprus is high and this always seems to be a pleasant surprise for visitors and expatriates.
There are a number of private clinics and hospitals as well as state run surgeries and emergency medical facilities; there are also care homes and a wide choice or well equipped dentist surgeries and opticians. Furthermore the cost of receiving medical treatment in Northern Cyprus is far from exorbitant.
